  1. Recognize and acknowledge that your family has a problem.
  2. Be willing to admit your possible contribution to the problem.
  3. Do not blame other family members for everything.
  4. Connect with your inner feelings of hurt.
  5. Be willing to leave past grievances in the past.
  6. Try to understand what triggers your discomfort regarding the decisions being made.
  7. Refrain from losing your temper; it gets you nowhere, and in fact, aggravates things even more.
  8. Be willing to put your best self forward.
  9. Take a positive approach.
  10. Don’t say “no” right away to other people’s suggestions.
  11. Think outside of the box; the answer may not be in their hands or yours, but it may be elsewhere.
  12. Be willing to forgive.

If you are able to incorporate some of these points into your approach, you are definitely heading in the right direction.

And lastly, don’t underestimate the power of walking into the room with a smile on your face, even if you don’t feel like it. Trust that you and your family will leave in a better place than when you arrived.
